Rose Cullis

I’m a queer playwright/writer/educator (she/her they/them) who enjoys and celebrates all forms of writing and performance. My short stories, plays and monologues are published in a number of theme-based anthologies, and other forms of writing in Event, This Magazine, Brick and Vallum, among others. A new creative non-fiction essay is upcoming Prairie Fire’s Fifty over Fifty in Spring 2025.

For a number of years I performed in queer-themed cabarets like Hysteria and Cheap Queers and presented new work in Summerworks, The Toronto Fringe Festival and Rhubarb. My play, The Happy Woman, was produced by Nightwood Theatre and short-listed for the Carol Bolt award in 2012.

I completed an MFA in Creative Writing at Guelph University in 2017. In March 2022, at Banff’s Performing Arts Creative Lab, I focused on developing After/BAAL, a new play with music, with a small group of theatre artists.

Our creative team for After/BAAL has received development grants from Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Arts Council. A week-long workshop focused on music and design at the Tarragon Theatre in December 2024 will include a presentation at the Tarragon Extra Space on December 14.
